Writing Effective Self-Assessments

CEUs: 0.7
Classroom, Virtual

Who Should Attend

All federal employees and contractors who are required to provide input for the evaluation of their performance, as well as individuals responsible for facilitating performance management for their organization.

Course Overview

Under the 2025–2026 federal workforce reset directives, performance management is no longer an annual paperwork exercise — it is a continuous, evidence-based operating system. Workplace evaluations remain essential to facilitate feedback, communicate accomplishments, and enforce accountability. However, writing an effective self-assessment now requires moving away from subjective narratives and duty lists, and moving toward verifiable evidence portfolios that prove measurable mission impact.

This course will provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to build a continuous evidence portfolio, navigate the new standardized fiscal-year appraisal cycle, and write a self-assessment that justifies your performance rating to your leadership team under the new supervisory accountability standards mandated by OPM.

Course Objectives

  • Understand what a self-assessment is (and is not) under the new OPM performance directives.

  • Learn how to tie your self-assessment to your organization's strategic plan and the new emphasis on efficiency and measurable results.

  • Discover how to track and document your performance continuously to support regular, documented supervisory check-ins throughout the appraisal cycle.

  • Gain an understanding of the new "Holding Employees Accountable" critical element and how it impacts your supervisor's need for concrete, verifiable evidence.

  • Review weak (duty-based) versus strong (evidence-based) accomplishment examples and understand why the distinction matters under the new rating standards.

  • Gain the skills necessary to write an effective self-assessment using the Role + Scope + Action + Result + Relevance accomplishment formula.

  • Understand what not to do when writing a self-assessment in the new performance landscape, including common mistakes that can undermine your rating.

  • Learn how to proactively address challenges, weaknesses, or Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) in your self-assessment without negatively impacting your annual performance rating.

  • Uncover how to link your self-assessment to your professional development needs and goals in a way that supports mission priorities.

  • Understand how the return-to-in-person work directive shifts the focus of your assessment from physical presence to measurable outcomes and mission delivery.
